Know who's hiring you

Know who's hiring you

Two very different kinds of companies will come after you in this industry, and they play by opposite rules. Knowing which is which, and which one fits you, is half the decision.

PE-Backed

Running a plan on a clock.

Family-Owned

Building something to keep.

What drives them

PE-Backed: A clear plan to grow the business and sell it in three to seven years.

Family-Owned: The owner's vision and values, usually with no deadline and an eye on the long haul.

Speed

PE-Backed: Fast. New systems, new acquisitions, quick growth. Expect change and some chaos.

Family-Owned: Steadier and more personal. Things move at the owner's pace.

Pay

PE-Backed: Solid base and bonus, often with a piece of the upside tied to the sale. Real money, but it depends on the outcome.

Family-Owned: Good cash, sometimes profit-sharing. A real ownership stake is rare.

Upside

PE-Backed: If the company sells and you're in a key seat, it can change your life.

Family-Owned: Stability, freedom, and a seat that can last as long as you want it. Fewer big paydays.

Risk

PE-Backed: Higher. Plans shift, owners change, and seats get cut when the plan does.

Family-Owned: Steadier, but it leans hard on one person's judgment and who's next in line.

Culture

PE-Backed: Numbers first. You'll be measured. Less feelings, more scoreboard.

Family-Owned: Relationships first. The culture is the owner's culture, and trust is everything.

The endgame

PE-Backed: Built to sell. Your job and your payout point toward that sale.

Family-Owned: Often built to keep. Any sale is years out, or it passes to family.

Which one fits you?

Neither is better. They're better for different people. If you like speed, a scoreboard, and a real shot at a payout, and you can handle some chaos, the PE world might be your place. If you want freedom, stability, and to build something that lasts, a strong family-owned company might be the better seat.

Be honest about where you actually do your best work. Picking the right kind of company is the biggest thing that decides whether a move works, and it's the first thing we'll talk through with you.
